Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a stern warning to Mt Kenya residents against what he termed as President William Ruto’s alleged political manipulation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in Kanyuambora, Mbeere, Embu County, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader accused President Ruto of orchestrating schemes to regain public trust by offering financial incentives to locals. Gachagua, however, told the residents not to reward such gestures with votes.
“As the leader of Mt Kenya, the President will bring a lot of money here. We cannot bury an elephant with its tusks. Take the money, but do not give him our votes,” Gachagua told the cheering crowd.
The former Deputy President further urged the community to punish Ruto at the ballot for allegedly dismissing former Attorney General Justin Muturi from Cabinet. He promised to work with other opposition leaders and Kenyans across the country to ensure Ruto serves only one term.
“I will join hands with all leaders of goodwill to make sure William Ruto does not return in 2027. This is our moment to stand up,” he added.
Gachagua’s allies also used the rally to condemn the Kenya Kwanza administration, accusing it of sponsoring violence during his return to the country on Thursday, August 21. Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thangwa alleged that state-backed goons were behind the clashes witnessed along Mombasa Road from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
“Now we know that it is you, William Ruto, who caused the violence during Gachagua’s arrival. Why are they only targeting him? That shows he is the leader,” Karungo said.
Gachagua’s homecoming was marked by chaos after a section of youth attacked his supporters and journalists covering the procession, leaving several injured. Despite the violence, the DCP leader was welcomed by a large delegation of political allies and supporters who vowed to back his renewed push to consolidate Mt Kenya ahead of 2027.
With tensions between Gachagua and Ruto escalating, the Mt Kenya political landscape appears set for heightened rivalry in the coming months as both camps prepare for the next electoral battle.
