Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a stern warning to his fellow opposition leaders, cautioning them against yielding to alleged enticements from President William Ruto’s administration. Speaking during a public engagement in Kansas, United States, Gachagua emphasized that any leader who abandons the “one-term” movement aimed at making Ruto a one-term president would face political isolation and public rejection.
Gachagua accused President Ruto of orchestrating a well-funded and strategic plan to weaken the opposition. According to him, the president is using state resources and personal incentives to divide the coalition, starting with the politically influential Mt Kenya region.
“William Ruto has written out a very elaborate plan to divide the opposition and he is using every trick in the book,” Gachagua said. “Anyone who will abandon the one-term movement at the behest of President William Ruto for financial gain or promised positions will go alone and be isolated.”
The Democracy for the Citizens (DCP) party leader insisted that the opposition remains focused and united, expressing confidence that the leaders currently allied with him will remain committed to their mission. He noted that the coalition’s shared goal is to present a single, strong presidential candidate to challenge President Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
“I am persuaded that the leaders I work with are strong and committed to a united opposition so that we have one candidate to face William Ruto in the next election,” he added.
Gachagua also affirmed his readiness to support whoever is chosen as the opposition’s flag bearer, stating that personal ambition should not override the collective mission to bring change to Kenya’s leadership.
Among the prominent political figures working with Gachagua are Martha Karua (People’s Liberation Party), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), and former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i. The coalition has promised to unveil its presidential candidate in due time, as the political temperature begins to rise ahead of the 2027 polls.
