Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has dismissed claims that it will launch on June 25, 2025, branding the reports as fake and politically motivated. The date, which coincides with a nationwide protest by Kenya’s Gen Z population to commemorate youth killed during last year’s demonstrations, sparked widespread speculation after viral posters circulated on social media.
The misleading posters, shared by influential online figures, claimed that the DCP launch would take place at Windsor Golf and Country Club. They also featured prominent opposition leaders, including Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, and even former President Uhuru Kenyatta. The posters also falsely claimed that South African opposition leader Julius Malema would be in attendance.
However, on June 23, the DCP flagged the posters as fake through its official X (formerly Twitter) account, writing “Fake news alert” and clarifying that no such event was scheduled.
Initially, the party had planned to launch on June 3 at the Kasarani Indoor Arena Auditorium. However, Sports Kenya cancelled the booking, citing prior commitments and preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN 2025), which Kenya is set to host. In a letter dated May 21, Sports Kenya Acting Director General Gabriel Komora advised DCP to seek an alternative venue.
In response, the party accused the government of attempting to frustrate its political activities. “The indefinite venue cancellation by Sports Kenya is an affront to democracy,” said Hezron Obaga, DCP Secretary General. “The Kasarani Gymnasium is a public facility that every Kenyan has a right to access for public use.”
Despite the hurdles, DCP says it is actively scouting for alternative venues and remains committed to officially launching before the end of the year.
Meanwhile, the Gen Z protest on June 25 is expected to draw significant public attention as youth push back against extra-judicial killings and demand government accountability. The DCP reiterated that it stands in solidarity with democratic freedoms and called for peaceful engagement during the protests.
