Embakasi North MP James Gakuya has dismissed reports that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has quit the opposition movement.
Speaking on a local TV station on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, Gakuya said Gachagua remains committed to the opposition. He explained that the Democratic Change Party (DCP) boss is only fine-tuning his strategy to take on President William Ruto in 2027.
Opposition Still United
According to Gakuya, the opposition remains strong despite leaders moving across the country to seek support. He said that Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, and Wycliffe Wamalwa are free to campaign for votes, as long as the team eventually agrees on one candidate.
“I do not see a problem with Kalonzo or Wamalwa moving around looking for votes. However, this team must ensure there is a convergence which shall remain firm,” he noted.
Gakuya warned that divisions within the opposition could weaken their chances in the upcoming elections. He urged unity and strategic planning ahead of both by-elections and the 2027 race.
Gachagua Declares His Bid
Meanwhile, Rigathi Gachagua has publicly declared his intention to vie for the presidency. On Sunday, September 14, 2025, during a church service at PCEA Ruringu Parish in Nyeri, he told congregants that he had accepted the call by Kenyans to serve.
“I have accepted to vie for the presidency of the Republic of Kenya. Kenyans have looked and said the only leader who can remove Ruto from office is Riggy G, and I have come home to seek your blessings,” he said.
Backed by Mt Kenya
Gachagua expressed confidence that he has the full support of the Mt Kenya region. He added that Kenyans recognize him as the strongest opposition figure capable of unseating President Ruto in 2027.
Despite ongoing court battles, the former deputy president believes his candidacy is both legitimate and timely.
