Makadara Member of Parliament (MP) George Aladwa has officially announced his intention to vie for the Nairobi Governor seat in the 2027 General Election on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.
Speaking confidently to the press on Thursday, October 2, 2025, Aladwa declared that anyone eyeing the Nairobi governorship must seek ODM’s endorsement. He expressed confidence that he has the experience, courage, and leadership qualities required to steer the capital city.
“Ule yoyote anataka kiti ya gavana, akuje kwa ODM. Na mimi pia, nakaa kwa hiyo kiti ya gavana kwa ODM. Kwa hivyo kama kuna mtu anataka kusimama, tukutane kwa debe,” Aladwa stated.
The MP emphasized that leadership cannot always be about pleasing everyone, noting that bold decision-making is part of effective governance. “Najua kuna wengine hawawezi kupenda mambo nimesema lakini huwezi kupendwa na kila mtu. Lazima kazi ianze,” he added.
ODM’s Strong Position in Nairobi
Aladwa’s declaration comes at a time when the Nairobi governorship is seen as a critical political prize. The capital remains Kenya’s economic and political hub, making the seat highly strategic for any party seeking to maintain influence.
ODM has historically enjoyed strong support in Nairobi, and Aladwa’s move signals the party’s early preparations for the 2027 elections. His entry into the race positions him as a key figure to watch, although competition for the ODM ticket is expected to intensify as the elections draw closer.
Raila Meeting and Sakaja’s Impeachment
Aladwa recently attended a high-level ODM meeting convened by party leader Raila Odinga on September 2, 2025, during the Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja impeachment talks. The meeting resolved to temporarily suspend the impeachment, giving Sakaja time to address concerns raised by the County Assembly.
With his intentions now clear, Aladwa has set the stage for a spirited political battle, insisting that Nairobi’s top seat belongs to ODM—and that he is ready to face any challenger at the ballot.
