Thousands of matatu culture enthusiasts thronged the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Friday night for the much-hyped ‘Nganya Fest,’ a celebration of Nairobi’s vibrant matatu culture. The headline act of the evening was the unveiling of Mood, a flamboyant, heavily modified matatu owned by George Ruto, son of President William Ruto.
Glittering with strobe lights, ear-splitting sound systems, and adorned with street-savvy graffiti, Mood rolled in amid wild cheers, a drizzle, and booming Arbantone music. The energy was electric as revelers danced, posed for selfies, and even clambered onto the matatu to experience its dazzling aura.
But the event has sparked a divisive debate. While many celebrated the cultural display, critics questioned the timing and intentions behind George Ruto’s involvement. Some viewed it as a genuine celebration of Kenya’s artistic street movement, while others dismissed it as a political stunt designed to win over the youth ahead of the 2027 elections.
Kibera-born rapper Octopizzo defended George’s investment, calling the matatu industry “a thriving ecosystem of art, music, and entrepreneurship,” and urged Kenyans not to demonize individual investors. “The enemy is not George. The enemy is bad governance,” he wrote.
Not everyone agreed. Politician Booker Omole criticized the extravaganza, labeling it “corrupt dynasty theatrics,” arguing that Kenya needs dignified, state-run transport systems instead of glorifying private flashiness.
The celebration was marred by tragedy, however. A popular tout known as Mavela was reportedly run over and killed by another matatu named Restoration during the event highlighting the dangerous side of the largely unregulated ‘Nganya’ scene.
As the matatu culture continues to capture the imagination of young Kenyans and global observers alike, the debate around its commercialization and political appropriation rages on. Whether Mood is a cultural icon or a calculated campaign vehicle remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the Nganya spirit isn’t slowing down anytime soon glitz, grit, and all.
