Githurai 44 Member of County Assembly (MCA) Mwangi Waithira has resigned. He says the Nairobi County government has failed to deliver on promises made to residents of his ward.
Waithira submitted his resignation letter at City Hall. He explained that poor relations with the county leadership and unfulfilled development pledges influenced his decision.
Unfulfilled Promises
According to Waithira, projects such as:
- The construction of a sports ground,
- The upgrade of Githurai Level 3 Hospital,
- The building of access roads, and
- A new local market,
have not been implemented.
“Ile kitu inanikasirisha ni kwamba ile kitu nilichaguliwa kufanya haifanyiki… watu wa Githurai wanangoja maendeleo ilhali kuna frustrations,” he said after handing in his letter.
Residents React
Many Githurai residents expressed disappointment but agreed with his reasons.
Beatrice Mumbi said, “Niko na uchungu sana kuskia MCA wangu anaresign kwa sababu ya maendeleo.”
Another resident, Kennedy Ndegwa, pointed to the lack of a sports ground. “Gavana aliweka bajeti na akamwambia MCA kwamba ataweka carpet so tumekuwa tukimpush MCA,” he stated.
Sakaja Responds
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja dismissed claims of bias. Speaking on Radio Citizen, he said his administration works equally with all MCAs.
However, Waithira argued that the Ward Development Fund is limited, leaving wards like Githurai with only one project per year.
Fourth MCA to Resign
Waithira is now the fourth MCA to resign before finishing their term. Unlike the previous three, who stepped down for personal reasons, he blamed frustrations in the county administration.
His resignation has raised fresh concerns about development in Nairobi. It also sparks questions on whether other MCAs may follow his example.
