Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji has made shocking claims about an assassination plot during his arrest on July 7, 2024.
The legislator was picked up by police during the Saba Saba protests, alongside a journalist and a boda boda rider. He was charged with terror-related offenses. However, the Anti-Terrorism Court in Kahawa dropped the charges after finding the prosecution had failed to prove its case.
Claims of a Wider Political Plot
Speaking at a bursary award ceremony at the University of Embu, Mukunji alleged that his arrest was part of a larger plan to silence him politically.
According to the MP, he was presented with two deadly options. One was to be shot and framed as resisting arrest. The other was to die in a staged fire at the police station.
Mukunji credited his survival to divine providence and what he described as “well-wishers” within the police service who secretly intervened.
Pressure on His Aides
The MP further claimed that his aides were also arrested and forced to sign false statements implicating him in criminal activity. He praised them for refusing to betray him, even under pressure.
“This was a clear attempt to finish my political career, but I will not be intimidated,” he declared.
Divisions Within the Police
Mukunji painted a picture of division within the police ranks. He alleged that while some officers colluded in the plot, others secretly informed his family and ensured he was protected.
He urged security agencies to resist political manipulation and remain faithful to their oath of service.
Defiant Stand
The Manyatta MP vowed to keep serving his constituents without fear. His claims are likely to spark fresh debate on the use of security forces in politics and the state of democracy in Kenya.
