Gladys Wairimu Kariuki, the widow of the late veteran politician GG Kariuki, has passed away at the age of 79. According to a statement from the family spokesperson, Jimmy Waigwa, Mrs. Kariuki died while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital after a short illness.
Born in 1945, Mrs. Kariuki was a respected and influential figure in Laikipia County. She was renowned for her deep commitment to public service and women empowerment, roles she embraced with humility and resilience throughout her life. Her contributions spanned decades, and she remained a steadfast pillar in both civic and religious communities.
A prominent farmer based in Rumuruti Ward, Mrs. Kariuki was not only a dedicated agriculturalist but also a grassroots leader who believed in uplifting her community. She served as the Chairlady of the Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO) for the Laikipia branch, where she spearheaded numerous empowerment programs aimed at uniting and supporting women across the region. Under her leadership, MYWO in Laikipia became a beacon of hope for many women seeking economic and social advancement.
Mrs. Kariuki also served as a councillor in the former Nyahururu Municipal Council, where she was known for her integrity, compassion, and tireless advocacy for education and community development. Earlier in her career, she taught at Ngarenaro Primary School in Nyahururu town, leaving a lasting impression on both colleagues and students.
Beyond her professional and civic achievements, Mrs. Kariuki was a devout Christian and an active member of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA). She participated faithfully in church congregations in Rumuruti, Nyahururu, and Nairobi, exemplifying a life guided by faith and service.
Gladys Wairimu Kariuki is survived by her five children, numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her passing marks the end of an era, but her legacy of community dedication, women empowerment, and faith-driven service will continue to inspire generations.
