Former nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has criticised the Council of Governors (CoG), accusing it of hypocrisy in its handling of Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s recent controversy.
Speaking on a local radio show on Friday, October 24, 2025, Orwoba questioned why the CoG was quick to issue a statement condemning Kahiga for his remarks about Raila Odinga’s death, yet remained silent during other national tragedies.
“The Council of Governors seemed too excited about Mutahi’s case,” Orwoba said. “I’ve never seen them speak out on serious issues like the Gen Z deaths, the Kware tragedy, or the people who died at Kasarani during Raila’s body viewing. But this time, they did.”
Orwoba accused the council of selective outrage and political grandstanding, arguing that its condemnation of Kahiga was more about publicity than principle. She described the CoG’s response as opportunistic, suggesting that it reflected misplaced priorities rather than a genuine concern for accountability or public decency.
Despite her criticism of the CoG, Orwoba also took issue with Governor Kahiga’s comments, describing them as reckless and unbecoming of a senior leader.
“It was in very bad taste for Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga to make those remarks,” she said. “Some leaders have grown old but not wise. He got too excited and careless.”
The former senator further argued that the political fallout surrounding Kahiga’s remarks was being used to advance personal and regional interests, particularly between the Mt. Kenya and Luo Nyanza regions.
She claimed that the controversy benefits certain leaders seeking to broker political deals with President William Ruto, citing Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga as an example.
Orwoba urged leaders to exercise restraint and honesty, warning that exploiting sensitive national matters for political gain only deepens divisions and erodes public trust.
