A deeply disturbing incident unfolded at Kitengela Hospital on Monday evening after armed goons stormed the facility amid the ongoing Saba Saba protests, disrupting medical services and endangering lives.
According to witnesses, the group stormed the hospital while a caesarean section was in progress, vandalising the operating theatre and setting a fire at the hospital’s main gate. Alarmed residents could be heard questioning the attackers, asking, “Mnafanya nini?” (What are you people doing?).
The Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society (KOGS) strongly condemned the attack, terming it a grave violation of medical ethics, patient rights, and basic human decency. KOGS President Dr. Kireki Omanwa said the disruption of a critical surgery endangered the lives of both the mother and the unborn child, while also traumatising hospital staff.
“This violation of a healthcare facility, an institution of healing and safety, is both reckless and inhumane,” Omanwa stated, calling for accountability and immediate protection of medical institutions during public unrest.
Omanwa further criticised the government’s security response to the protests, noting that roadblocks, tear gas, and curfews have prevented pregnant women and critically ill children from accessing vital healthcare. He warned that such restrictions violate Article 43(1)(a) of the Kenyan Constitution, which guarantees every person the right to the highest attainable standard of health.
Tension remained high in Kitengela following the unrest. One protester, identified as 21-year-old Brian Kimutai, a bodaboda rider, was reportedly shot dead during clashes with police. His death was confirmed by a senior nurse at Kitengela Level 4 Hospital, where he had been rushed after the shooting.
Four other individuals with gunshot wounds were admitted at the same facility, while several others including police officers were treated for various injuries.
The shocking events at Kitengela Hospital have intensified calls for restraint, protection of healthcare services, and a peaceful resolution to the ongoing national protests. As investigations continue, Kenyans demand justice for the victims and stronger safeguards for healthcare access in times of civil unrest.
