Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to supporting families affected by natural disasters, including those impacted by the recent landslide in Chesongoch, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
Speaking on Saturday during a visit to the affected area, where he was accompanied by First Lady Rachel Ruto and other government officials, CS Ruku said the government through the State Department for Special Programmes will continue to stand with Kenyans affected by calamities across the country.
Ruku noted that President William Ruto had directed the Ministry to work closely with other ministries, departments, and agencies to develop and implement programmes aimed at helping communities adapt to the effects of disasters and the broader challenges of climate change.
“The people of Marakwet and others affected by disasters across the country must feel that the Government of Kenya, led by President William Ruto, cares for them,” said CS Ruku.
He emphasized that the Ministry is taking all necessary steps to ensure that displaced families are resettled and supported to rebuild their lives in a dignified manner. This includes rebuilding homes, restoring livelihoods, covering hospital expenses for the injured, and providing funeral assistance for those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
The Cabinet Secretary also commended First Lady Rachel Ruto for her compassion and hands-on leadership in ensuring that affected families received immediate relief support. The First Lady personally oversaw the distribution of food and non-food supplies to the victims.
The victims of the Chesongoch landslide, which left several families displaced and caused significant destruction, will be laid to rest on November 21, 2025.
The government has assured residents of continued assistance as recovery and rebuilding efforts progress, underscoring its dedication to helping disaster-hit communities regain stability and hope.
