The government has pledged full financial and social support to victims and families affected by the tragic road accident in Kisumu that claimed 26 lives and left 26 others injured.
Medical Services Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Olunga assured that all survivors will receive free medical treatment, while bereaved families will not bear any burial expenses. “There is no single patient who will pay any bill, and no single family will incur any cost for the burial of their loved ones,” Dr. Olunga said. He added that beyond covering immediate needs, the government plans to extend support to affected families even after the burials.
Speaking at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where many of the injured are being treated, Dr. Olunga confirmed that the national government is working closely with Kisumu County leadership, including Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, area Members of Parliament, Members of County Assembly, and the local community. He noted that Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo will oversee the government’s national-level coordination in the recovery process.
“The government will take over all the support required. We are also keen to give families a structured way forward to recover from this tragedy,” Dr. Olunga stated, adding that further details on additional support measures will be announced soon.
Medical teams in Kisumu are working around the clock to ensure all 26 survivors undergo necessary surgeries without delay. Facilities across the city have been mobilised to accelerate treatment and prevent medical backlogs.
Local leaders have welcomed the government’s intervention, noting that the accident has deeply shaken the community and requires a unified response. They also called for sustained measures to help families rebuild their lives.
The fatal crash occurred near the Coptic roundabout along the Kisumu–Kakamega road and is one of the deadliest accidents in the region this year. The tragedy has renewed calls for improved road safety measures, stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, and heightened public awareness campaigns to prevent future incidents.
As the community mourns, the government’s swift commitment to covering both medical and burial costs aims to ease the financial burden on grieving families while ensuring survivors receive urgent and comprehensive medical care.
