Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has strongly condemned the recent assassination attempt on her Deputy, Oyugi Magwanga, calling for swift investigations and justice. Speaking after the alarming Sunday night incident, Wanga urged residents to reject violence and remain united during this difficult time.
In a statement released Monday, Wanga expressed deep concern over the attack, emphasizing the need to uphold peace, law, and order. “I am deeply concerned by reports of an incident involving my Deputy Governor, Hon. Oyugi Magwanga, last evening,” she said. “Let us reject violence in all its forms and stand together for peace, justice, and the rule of law.”
The Governor urged security agencies to move quickly and conduct impartial investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice. She stressed that such an incident raises serious concerns about the safety of elected leaders in the county.
“This incident has come at a time when our county is still mourning the recent loss of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, the Member of Parliament for Kasipul,” she noted. “I urge our security agencies to move swiftly and impartially to investigate this matter.”
The attempted assassination reportedly took place in Kabuor village, East Kamagak ward in Kasipul constituency. According to Magwanga, gunmen trailed his vehicle as he returned home at around 9pm. After receiving intelligence that he was being followed, Magwanga altered his route and alerted his security officers.
The deputy governor’s security team, using the original route, encountered the gang. Believing Magwanga was inside, the assailants opened fire on the vehicle. In response, the security officers returned fire, forcing the attackers to flee.
Magwanga later recorded a statement with the police, who have launched investigations into the attack.
Governor Wanga’s call for unity, calm, and justice reflects growing concern over rising insecurity in the region, especially targeting political leaders. The incident has drawn national attention, with many calling for heightened protection for public officials and a thorough investigation into politically motivated violence.
