Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has issued a passionate call for justice following the shocking murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament, Ong’ondo Were, describing the incident as a targeted assassination and an affront to justice.
Speaking during a condolence visit to the late MP’s home, Wanga denounced what she termed an orchestrated disinformation campaign aimed at diverting public attention from the real issues surrounding Were’s killing.
“This is not a coincidence. The disinformation flooding social media appears well-organised, possibly even funded. It is meant to mislead and distract from the truth,” Wanga said.
Governor Wanga also revealed that Were had repeatedly reported threats to his life to authorities, even escalating his concerns to the Inspector General of Police. However, she questioned the action — or inaction — taken in response to these grave warnings.
“Were said multiple times that his life was in danger. He never stole from anyone. He was gunned down like a chicken, humiliated like a thief. We demand answers, not excuses,” she declared.
The slain MP was fatally shot on the evening of April 30 near the City Mortuary roundabout in Nairobi by unknown assailants on a motorcycle. The chilling attack occurred around 7:30 p.m. and has since sparked national outrage and calls for accountability.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced on Friday that significant progress had been made in the probe. Investigators confirmed that they have identified potential suspects and believe the murder was a targeted, premeditated act.
“This detailed analysis has yielded significant leads. While the motive remains under investigation, the evidence points to a well-planned attack,” the DCI noted.
The National Police Service has echoed similar sentiments, describing the assassination as “targeted and predetermined.”
Governor Wanga’s bold statements add pressure on security agencies to expedite their investigations and bring the culprits to justice. The incident has also reignited debates about the safety of elected officials and the effectiveness of law enforcement responses to threats against public servants.
As the country mourns the loss of Ong’ondo Were, the demand for truth and justice continues to grow louder.
