Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi has urged Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna to step forward and take charge of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following the passing of its long-time leader, Raila Odinga.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on Monday, Havi said that while mourning Raila is necessary, Sifuna must not delay in assuming leadership of the party. He emphasized that political transitions demand courage, clarity, and decisiveness.
“Mourn Raila Odinga, but do not hesitate in taking over the leadership of ODM,” Havi said. “In fact, by right now you should have taken over; otherwise, the ODM party will continue disintegration. It will continue deviation and fragmentation; it will remain a party domiciled in Siaya, Migori, Homa Bay, and Kisumu.”
Havi noted that Raila built ODM as a national political movement that transcended ethnic and regional boundaries. He warned that the party risks losing its national outlook unless Sifuna and other leaders act swiftly to ensure continuity.
“When the king is dead, the heir apparent is prepared for coronation quickly,” Havi added. “That is how transitions work. A succession to high office does not require hesitation.”
The outspoken lawyer said the moment calls for firmness, vision, and unity within ODM. He added that Raila would not have wanted the party he built to crumble due to leadership indecision.
“I do not think that is what Raila Odinga would want to see the party he built fragment. Take over the party,” he urged.
Havi’s remarks come as ODM members and supporters across the country continue to mourn the death of Raila Odinga, whose political career and influence shaped Kenya’s opposition politics for over four decades.
