The widow of Albert Ojwang, the Kisumu-based teacher and social media influencer who died under mysterious circumstances while in police custody, has emotionally recounted their final conversation, revealing that he sounded terrified during his last moments.
Speaking at a press briefing in Nairobi on Saturday, Nevenina Onyango disclosed that her husband remained in contact with her throughout his journey from Kisumu to Nairobi after being arrested. However, she noted a worrying shift in his tone once he arrived at Central Police Station.
“When they reached Central Police Station, he sounded a bit worried. He wasn’t really okay,” Nevenina said, struggling to hold back tears. “My last call with him was around 9 p.m. and he sounded scared. He wasn’t talking well. Like he was just afraid.”
She added that throughout the earlier stages of the journey, Ojwang had seemed relatively calm. “Along the way he sounded just okay. I even asked him if he had taken anything. He told me the officers had bought him some snacks,” she explained. “But something changed that night.”
Ojwang’s sudden death has left his young family in shock. Their son, Nevenina revealed, has started asking difficult questions after overhearing mourners mention his father’s name. “He heard people crying and mentioning Omondi, and he knows Omondi is his dad. At one point he asked me, ‘Has daddy died?’ But I’ve been trying to manage him by saying that is not the case.”
Ojwang’s parents, Mzee Meshack Opiyo and Mama Margaret Achieng, also attended the briefing, expressing heartbreak and calling for justice.
The family has not yet finalized burial plans, stating they are still coming to terms with the tragedy and pursuing answers from authorities. They indicated that funeral arrangements would be communicated soon.
As questions continue to mount over the circumstances of his death, Ojwang’s loved ones are pleading for transparency, accountability, and justice for a man they describe as peaceful, loving, and full of promise.
