The Ministry of Health has announced the deployment of 6,484 healthcare interns, set to begin their one-year internship programme on July 1st, 2025. This marks a significant step in the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s health workforce and ensure high-quality service delivery across the nation.
Speaking on the development, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale emphasized the importance of hands-on experience in building a resilient and skilled health sector. “The internship is a milestone that underscores the Ministry’s continued dedication to strengthening Kenya’s health workforce and developing a pipeline of skilled, hands-on professionals to support service delivery across the country,” said CS Duale.
The interns will be placed in accredited internship centres nationwide, where they will undergo a 12-month structured internship programme. The programme is tailored to offer supervised clinical training and practical exposure in real-world healthcare environments, equipping the interns with the competence and confidence needed in their respective fields.
The deployment includes a diverse group of professionals: 1,147 medical officer interns, 87 dentist interns, 500 pharmacist interns, 659 Bachelor of Science clinical officer interns, 1,993 clinical officer interns with diplomas, and 2,098 Bachelor of Science nursing officer interns. This strategic allocation aims to address gaps in healthcare staffing, particularly in underserved and rural areas.
The Ministry has advised all interns to collect their posting letters at the Ministry of Health headquarters, Afya House, on Monday, June 30th, 2025. Timely collection will facilitate a smooth transition into their assigned roles starting the next day.
The internship programme is not only a rite of passage for healthcare graduates but also a critical element in the government’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda. By ensuring young professionals gain practical skills and contribute to healthcare delivery, the Ministry is reinforcing its commitment to a healthier Kenya.
This initiative comes at a time when the healthcare sector faces rising demand for services, making the role of interns increasingly crucial in alleviating workloads and enhancing patient care outcomes.
