A light-hearted moment punctuated an otherwise formal joint address at State House, Nairobi, on Wednesday, as Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni made an official visit to Kenya. While quoting the Bible during his speech, Museveni mistakenly referred to Kenyan President William Ruto as a bishop, prompting a cheerful correction from the host.
The moment unfolded after the two leaders concluded closed-door bilateral meetings and were addressing the press. President Museveni, reflecting on the conduct of the younger generation, attempted to cite a biblical passage: “They left undone what they ought to have done and they did that which they ought not to have done and there is no truth in them.” However, he seemed uncertain about its exact origin.
Seeking clarification, President Ruto stepped in to affirm that the quote was indeed from the Bible. Museveni, in jest, responded, “It’s in the Bible also. The Bishop has told you,” drawing laughter from dignitaries and officials in attendance.
President Ruto took the moment in stride, gently correcting Museveni with a smile: “And just to make a small correction, I am not a bishop! But I have made a commitment that when I’m done being president, I will become an evangelist.”
The humorous exchange offered a rare, candid glimpse into the warm camaraderie between the two leaders, underlining the informal diplomacy that often accompanies official state functions.
Ruto went on to praise Museveni for his deep-rooted Christian faith, recalling a visit to Uganda during which Museveni insisted on praying in his native Kinyankole. “I know that you have a serious grounding as a Christian,” Ruto remarked. “I came to see you and you prayed for food in Kinyankole. I asked why and you said that is how you were taught when you were young.”
Beyond the banter, the leaders reaffirmed the longstanding ties between Kenya and Uganda, vowing to strengthen cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and regional peace efforts. But for many, it was the bishop-turned-president-turned-future-evangelist quip that made the headlines.
