National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has defended the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), saying it has been vindicated following the reappearance of blogger Ndiangui Kinyagia.
Speaking at the Women’s Economic Empowerment Forum in Taita Taveta County, Ichung’wah stated that many Kenyans had unfairly doubted DCI Director Mohammed Amin when he maintained that Ndiangui was not in their custody. “Last week, reports circulated all over that a young man had been abducted. The family even went to court, and DCI was directed to produce him. DCI was clear they had not arrested the man, but many people did not believe,” Ichung’wah said.
The Majority Leader emphasized that the DCI had also been actively searching for the blogger, and his reappearance supports the agency’s earlier statements. Ndiangui, who went missing on June 21, resurfaced on Thursday morning and presented himself to the court. The court then issued an order barring police from arresting him.
The disappearance of Ndiangui had sparked widespread concern, with his family accusing the state of abduction. Their lawyer, Kibe Mungai, told the court that Ndiangui contacted his family on Tuesday evening, assuring them of his safety. This led to the suspension of an earlier court directive requiring DCI boss Amin to appear in court.
Justice Chacha Mwita, who had initially ordered the DCI to produce Ndiangui “alive or dead,” noted that DCI officers had indeed visited the blogger’s residence in Kinoo on the day he went missing. “The DCI officers visited his residence, and they are the only ones who were there when he disappeared,” said the judge, citing the submissions made by Ndiangui’s legal team.
The police had claimed they searched the premises but did not find him. Despite the controversy, Ichung’wah insisted the matter highlights the need for restraint before casting blame, urging Kenyans to avoid rushing to conclusions without full facts.
Ndiangui’s voluntary court appearance has now shifted the narrative, offering some relief to the embattled DCI leadership.
