National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has firmly rejected accusations by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua linking him and other leaders to the recent wave of protests and violence across parts of Kenya.
Speaking in a strongly worded statement, Ichung’wah described Gachagua’s claims as “absurd and shameless,” asserting that the unrest, including attacks on police stations, the burning of the Kikuyu Law Courts, and looting, was orchestrated by Gachagua’s own political allies.
“The only person responsible for Gachagua’s political downfall is Gachagua himself,” Ichung’wah stated. “His allies are not victims they are perpetrators, charged in courts of law with clear, damning evidence.”
He dismissed claims that he was behind the storming of police stations and called on Gachagua to present concrete proof. “If he has an ounce of evidence to prove otherwise, let him take it to the ICC, the UN, or whatever rooftop he prefers,” Ichung’wah said. “But don’t mistake accountability for persecution.”
Citing the arrest of Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, a close ally of Gachagua, Ichung’wah insisted that the unrest was not random but backed by certain political players. According to Ichung’wah, Mukunji was caught on camera inciting looting and violence during the June 25 protests.
He dismissed Gachagua’s narrative of political victimhood as a calculated effort to deflect from personal responsibility. “We will not allow him to weaponize lies to cleanse himself while dragging others into his abyss,” he added.
Ichung’wah also criticized Gachagua’s past allegations, including claims of an MP being poisoned, as fabricated drama aimed at garnering public sympathy. “We will not allow criminals to pose as martyrs or anarchists to destabilize the nation for selfish political gain,” he said.
This latest war of words underscores the deepening rift within the Kenya Kwanza alliance, with growing political tensions between allies of President William Ruto and those backing Gachagua. As the fallout continues, the public and political observers will be closely watching the next steps in this escalating feud.
