The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has dismissed as fake a notice circulating on social media claiming that two United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidates had been declared winners unopposed in the upcoming by-elections.
The false document, titled “Declaration of No Contest for Members of Tembelio and Metkei Wards in the By-Elections scheduled for 27th November 2025,” alleged that the Commission had declared UDA’s Ruben Kigen Tobosei and Philip Kipkosgei Kiprutto as duly elected Members of County Assembly (MCAs) for Tembelio and Metkei wards respectively.
The fake notice further cited constitutional and electoral provisions to make it appear authentic, claiming to be signed by IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethekon. However, the Commission swiftly moved to disown the document.
“The Commission advises the public to disregard it,” IEBC stated on X (formerly Twitter), affirming that no such declaration had been made.
According to the IEBC, the number of upcoming ward by-elections remains unchanged at 16. The Commission also reiterated that the official by-elections—scheduled for November 27, 2025—will include contests in Baringo for the senatorial seat and in six parliamentary constituencies: Banissa, Kasipul, Magarini, Malava, Mbeere North, and Ugunja.
IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon emphasized that the Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) will handle all nomination-related disputes between October 8 and October 17, 2025, to ensure fairness and legal compliance.
Additionally, the IEBC Electoral Code of Conduct Committee will oversee any violations of the electoral code from the publication of the by-election notice until the gazettement of the results.
The official campaign period will run from October 8 to November 24, 2025, allowing candidates to campaign daily between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Political parties and independent candidates must submit their Election Agents by November 11.
The Commission confirmed that the certified voter register published on June 21, 2022, will be used in the November 27 by-elections.
