The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has issued a stern warning to Kenyans against double registration and providing false voter information ahead of the upcoming by-elections scheduled for November 27, 2025.
In a statement released on Thursday, November 20, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon emphasized that double registration is a serious electoral offence punishable under Kenyan law. He revealed that the commission has implemented advanced digital systems capable of detecting and removing individuals attempting to register more than once.
“Double registration is an electoral offence. Our system will definitely flag out a person who attempts to register as a voter more than once,” Chairperson Ethekon stated.
The commission also cautioned citizens against intentionally submitting incorrect information during the voter registration exercise, warning that such acts compromise the credibility of the elections.
The warnings come following reports of politicians allegedly attempting to manipulate the electoral process through double registration and falsification of voter details. Under the Electoral Offences Act of 2016 and the Elections Act of 2011, offences such as double registration or providing false information carry penalties of up to Ksh1 million, imprisonment for at least one year, or both.
Other serious electoral offences outlined in the legislation include bribery, using force or violence during elections, interference with voting secrecy, forging or destroying ballot papers, and public officers participating in elections. Offenders found guilty of bribery or using violence may face fines up to Ksh2 million or imprisonment for up to six years.
As Kenyans prepare to head to the polls later this month, the IEBC reiterates the importance of adhering to the law and maintaining the integrity of the electoral process. Citizens are urged to register accurately and report any attempts to manipulate the voter registration system.
By enforcing strict measures and leveraging digital systems, the IEBC aims to ensure credible and transparent by-elections across the country.
