The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has released the official voting schedule and procedures ahead of the November 27 by-elections. In a public service announcement, the commission confirmed that polling stations will open at 6am and close at 5pm across all 24 affected jurisdictions.
Voters must carry the national ID or passport they used during registration. On arrival at their polling centres, they will hand these documents to IEBC officials for verification. Their fingerprints will then be scanned using the KIEMS kit to confirm voter identity. After verification, each voter will receive the appropriate ballot paper.
The IEBC stressed the importance of maintaining voting integrity. All voters will cast their ballots in private and drop them into the designated ballot boxes. After voting, an IEBC official will mark a voter’s finger to prevent multiple voting.
Baringo County will hold the only county-wide election, where residents will elect a new senator following the death of William Cheptumo on February 16, 2025. The race has drawn significant attention after former senator Gideon Moi withdrew in favour of UDA’s Kiprono Cherubet, who has the backing of President William Ruto.
Several constituencies will also elect new Members of Parliament. Kasipul, Malava, and Banissa will fill vacancies left by the deaths of MPs Ong’ondo Were, Malulu Injendi, and Kullow Maalim Hassan. Ugunja and Mbeere North residents will vote to replace former MPs Opiyo Wandayi and Geoffrey Ruku, who joined the Cabinet. Magarini Constituency will also head to the polls after the Supreme Court nullified the 2022 election.
Additionally, 17 wards will elect new MCAs. These include Kabuchai Chwele (Bungoma), Chewani (Tana River), Fafi (Garissa), Mumbuni North (Machakos), Lake Zone and Nanaam (Turkana), as well as Purko (Kajiado), Kisa East (Kakamega), Kariobangi North (Nairobi), and three wards in Nyamira County.
The IEBC has urged all registered voters to turn out early and follow the outlined procedures for a smooth and credible electoral process.
