Inspector General (IG) Douglas Kanja has announced that the nationwide police recruitment drive concluded smoothly, with all 427 centres across the country reporting successful operations. The exercise, which aimed to enlist 10,000 suitably qualified youth as police constables, was conducted on Monday and marked one of the most coordinated recruitment efforts by the National Police Service (NPS) in recent years.
Speaking during a monitoring visit in Machakos County, IG Kanja said he had toured several regions, including Narok, to observe the process firsthand. He noted that teams supervising the centres ensured order, fairness, and transparency throughout the day. Kanja added that the recruitment stations were active from morning until the close of the exercise at 5:00 pm, with encouraging turnout from applicants.
“I am here to review the ongoing recruitment exercise. It has commenced in all 427 recruitment centres across the country. From Narok to Machakos, the teams have done well, and the process has been smooth since morning,” he said.
Kanja stressed that the 10,000 new recruits come at a critical time, especially since the service has not conducted any intake over the past three years. He noted that boosting police numbers was essential as the country prepares for future national needs, including the 2027 general elections.
“This number is coming in at a crucial moment because we need to add strength to the service. It is a reformist group that is going to join the service,” he stated.
The NPS advertised the opportunities on October 31, calling on young Kenyans to apply for the constable positions. With the recruitment now complete, successful candidates will proceed to the next steps, including verification and training placement.
Officials say the intake will help improve the police-to-population ratio, strengthen ongoing reforms, and enhance service delivery across the country.
