Eleven suspects, including nine foreigners and two locals, have been arrested in a major government-led crackdown targeting illegal mining operations in Migori and Siaya counties. The operation, ordered by Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho, was carried out by officers from the Mining Police Unit and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
In Siaya County, two foreigners were arrested in the Yamo-Oloko area of Bondo Sub-County. During the operation, officers seized three sealed cartons of gelignite explosives weighing 25 kilograms each, 72 explosive charges, and 137 shock tubes. The suspects were arraigned in court, and their case is set for mention on December 22.
Meanwhile, in Migori County, a separate raid at Awovinar Property Ltd led to the arrest of seven foreigners and two locals found conducting mining activities without valid licenses, in violation of Section 202(1) of the Mining Act, Cap 306. The foreigners have since been deported, while the locals were released on bond as legal proceedings continue.
Mining Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai reaffirmed the government’s determination to eliminate illegal mining across the country.
“The gloves are off. We’re taking decisive action against illegal mining, and we won’t stop until the law is upheld. No individual or organization will be above the law,” said PS Kimtai.
He stressed that while mining remains a legitimate economic activity, it must be conducted under proper licenses to ensure compliance and environmental responsibility. Kimtai added that County Mining Officers have been deployed nationwide to streamline operations and ensure the sector contributes effectively to Kenya’s economic growth.
The crackdown underscores the government’s renewed commitment to regulating Kenya’s mining sector and safeguarding natural resources from exploitation.
