Kericho Governor Dr. Eric Mutai has expressed gratitude to the Senate for dismissing an impeachment motion against him, calling the decision a testament to God’s grace and a new opportunity to serve the people of Kericho.
Speaking on Friday after the Senate vote, Mutai acknowledged his imperfections but said the ruling marked a fresh start for his administration.
“I am not perfect; I have my flaws just like any other human being. But God has given us another opportunity again to go back to Kericho and work for the people,” he said. “God is truly a God of second chances.”
The governor thanked his family, supporters, MCAs who stood by him, his legal team led by Katwa Kigen, and pastors who held prayer vigils during the tense proceedings. He also commended the Senate for conducting what he described as a fair and transparent process.
“The Senate gave us time, they listened to our debates, and they were able to make a rational judgment. We did not lobby; we simply presented our case, and justice prevailed,” he said.
Despite praising the Senate, Mutai accused some Kericho leaders of fueling political divisions ahead of the 2027 elections. He insisted that local politics should focus on development, not personal interests.
“What we have in Kericho County is a power struggle for those politicians who feel that they cannot face the governor in 2027. These games are not for the people of Kericho; they are for personal interests,” Mutai remarked.
Nonetheless, he extended an olive branch, urging leaders to set aside political differences and work together. “It is time now to pull together as a county and move forward as one because we must build Kericho,” he said.
The Senate vote saw 26 senators rule that the County Assembly had not met the constitutional two-thirds threshold needed to oust the governor, while 16 supported the impeachment motion and one abstained. This is the second time in less than a year that Mutai has survived impeachment on procedural grounds.
The governor vowed to focus on service delivery, urging calm and unity as Kericho heads into the final years of his administration.
