Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially announced his bid for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 General Election, signaling a bold shift from judicial service to political leadership. Speaking during a televised interview with K24 on Monday, July 21, Maraga emphasized his readiness to face the political heat, describing the presidential race as a “murky environment” that requires courage, sacrifice, and conviction.
“This is a murky environment. People will do all manner of things, and in my view, that is the price we must pay to reset this country to where it is supposed to be. I am willing to pay it,” he said.
Maraga, who is remembered for his unwavering stance on constitutionalism most notably nullifying the 2017 presidential election—described the opportunity to serve as president as the highest honour Kenyans could bestow upon him.
“If I can succeed and reset this country, that would be the greatest privilege the Kenyan people would have given me. I promise Kenyans that I will not let them down,” he affirmed.
He promised to avoid the toxic political discourse that often defines Kenyan politics, pledging instead to address issues constructively and uphold the dignity of public office.
“Those attacks are often meant to cover someone’s weaknesses. Instead of focusing on what a leader can deliver, they are insulted. We want to change that so leaders understand they are serving the people,” Maraga said.
His declaration comes after weeks of speculation, with Maraga officially making his intentions known on July 16 during an interview with NTV. He cited the current socio-political state of the nation—particularly the mistreatment of the youth and lack of accountability—as key factors in his decision.
“This has come as a result of what has been happening in the country. Seeing our young people being treated the way they have been is extremely worrying,” he said.
Maraga noted that his decision followed extensive consultations with friends, stakeholders, and deep personal reflection, stating it was time for a new leadership philosophy that puts integrity, justice, and the common good at the forefront.
“We cannot let some people throw our country to the dogs,” he said.
