The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has issued a strong condemnation following a violent incident in which police officers were assaulted in Cheptulu, Tiriki East Sub-County, Vihiga County. The attack, which left one officer seriously injured, occurred during a routine patrol by officers from Shaviringa Police Post along the Muhudu-Shaviringa Road.
According to reports, the officers encountered individuals suspected of engaging in unlawful activities. Upon confrontation, the suspects raised an alarm, triggering a mob attack by members of the public. One officer sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment as investigations into the incident continue.
In a statement released on Thursday, IPOA Chairman Issack Hassan described the assault as “wholly unacceptable,” emphasizing that such acts of mob justice not only threaten the lives of officers but also undermine the rule of law.
“It is wholly unacceptable for individuals to take the law into their own hands. Such actions undermine the rule of law, promote lawlessness, and erode the foundations of public order and security,” said Hassan.
He further expressed concern over the growing trend of public retaliation, noting that resorting to violence—whether by or against police officers—runs counter to the ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing police accountability and professionalism.
“Such conduct defeats the spirit and intent of ongoing police reforms and risks reversing the progress made,” he added.
IPOA called on citizens to use established legal and oversight mechanisms to address any concerns involving law enforcement. The authority highlighted its mandate to conduct impartial and apolitical investigations into police conduct and assured the public of its commitment to justice.
Hassan urged the public to channel grievances through institutions such as IPOA rather than resort to mob action. He reiterated that Kenya possesses both a functional police service and an independent judiciary capable of addressing misconduct within the bounds of the law.
The Authority concluded by encouraging calm and lawful engagement between citizens and law enforcement officers to safeguard public order and mutual trust.
