The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened investigations into an alleged assault of a minor by police officers at Narosusura Police Station in Narok South Subcounty.
In a statement issued on Friday, IPOA said the minor had been arrested and detained at the station over a petty offence before allegedly being assaulted while in police custody. The child is currently receiving treatment at the Narok County Referral Hospital.
“In line with its mandate to ensure accountability and the observance of human rights in policing, IPOA is investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged arrest and subsequent injury of the minor,” the authority said.
IPOA noted that the findings of the investigation will guide the next course of action. Should police involvement be confirmed, the authority pledged to make appropriate recommendations for redress.
“The authority will determine the extent of police involvement and, where necessary, make appropriate recommendations,” the statement added.
IPOA reaffirmed its commitment to conducting impartial investigations aimed at upholding accountability within the police service and promoting adherence to the Constitution.
“The authority is committed to conducting this and other investigations impartially as it fulfils its mandate of holding the police accountable and advancing the objectives of Article 244 of the Constitution,” IPOA said.
IPOA’s mandate includes investigating complaints from the public, monitoring police operations, and ensuring humane treatment of suspects in custody. The oversight body also audits the work of the Internal Affairs Unit of the National Police Service to promote transparency and public confidence.
The ongoing probe highlights IPOA’s continued efforts to strengthen professionalism, justice, and respect for human rights within Kenya’s law enforcement system.
Through such investigations, the authority reinforces its mission to build trust between the police and the public while curbing impunity within the service.
