Former Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) chairperson Irungu Nyakera has lauded the appointment of Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi as the Spokesperson and Head of the United Opposition Secretariat, terming him the right man to sharpen Kenya’s opposition voice.
In a statement released on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Nyakera praised Kituyi’s vast governance and leadership experience, noting that his global credentials make him an ideal figure to coordinate the opposition’s agenda.
“Congratulations to Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi on his appointment as Spokesperson and Head of the United Opposition Secretariat. With his global experience as UNCTAD Secretary-General, Cabinet Minister, and respected economist, he is the perfect choice to drive Kenya’s opposition agenda,” Nyakera stated.
Nyakera expressed confidence that Kituyi’s leadership would play a key role in holding President William Ruto’s administration accountable.
“His leadership will expose the failures of this blood-soaked regime and ensure that Ruto becomes WANTAM,” he said, using a phrase that has quickly gained traction in opposition circles.
Addressing claims of tribalism within the opposition, Nyakera dismissed the accusations, pointing to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as an example.
“And to those quick to label Rigathi a tribalist, if that were true, why didn’t he appoint Mutahi Ngunyi?” Nyakera posed.
Kituyi’s appointment was announced on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka via social media. The United Opposition coalition is a loose alliance of parties and leaders including Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party, Kalonzo’s Wiper Patriotic Front, Martha Karua’s People’s Liberation Party, Eugene Wamalwa’s Democratic Action Party–Kenya, Justin Muturi’s Democratic Party, and the Jubilee Party, currently represented by Chairman Torome Saitoti with the backing of former CS Fred Matiang’i.
The coalition is yet to formalize its agreement but is actively mobilizing ahead of the 2027 general elections. Leaders including Gachagua, Kalonzo, Karua, Wamalwa, Muturi, Kituyi, Matiang’i, and former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi are working together to build a united front aimed at unseating President Ruto.
With Kituyi at the helm of communication, the opposition hopes to present a stronger, united voice in the coming political battles.
