Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo has been impeached following a decisive vote by the County Assembly, marking a dramatic development in the county’s political landscape. In a session held on Tuesday, 16 out of 18 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted in favour of a motion to remove the first-term governor from office. Two members were absent, and no one opposed the motion.
The impeachment motion, which was tabled by Sericho MCA Abubakar Godana, cited gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violations of the Constitution and other key governance laws. Among the legal frameworks referenced were Chapter Six of the Constitution on leadership and integrity, the Leadership and Integrity Act, and the Public Officers’ Ethics Act.
“These Acts provide for respect for the rule of law, good governance, accountability, and transparency as key principles of leadership,” Godana told the Assembly.
Governor Guyo did not appear before the County Assembly to defend himself, despite receiving a formal invitation. His absence was officially recorded, and the session proceeded in accordance with the Standing Orders.
The motion to impeach comes after weeks of intense political debate, public participation forums, and legal consultations across Isiolo’s ten wards. The Assembly maintains that the move reflects its dedication to upholding accountability and the rule of law.
The next step, as outlined by Article 181 of the Constitution and Section 33 of the County Governments Act, involves forwarding the resolution to the Senate. The Senate is expected to review the case and either uphold or overturn the impeachment.
This development throws the county’s leadership into uncertainty and sets the stage for a high-stakes Senate process that will determine Governor Guyo’s political fate.
If upheld, Guyo will be the latest in a growing list of Kenyan governors removed from office through impeachment, a process that underscores the increasing assertiveness of county assemblies in enforcing constitutional leadership standards. Until the Senate makes a determination, Isiolo residents and political observers across the country will be watching closely.
