Digital strategist and political commentator Dennis Itumbi has lauded Siaya Governor James Orengo as a steadfast friend and admirable politician, despite the two holding differing political views.
In a heartfelt Facebook post on August 8, Itumbi expressed his respect for Orengo, recalling moments when the governor supported him during personal legal challenges. The remarks came shortly after Orengo made a surprise public appearance during the burial of veteran politician and trailblazing former MP Phoebe Asiyo in Homa Bay County.
“James Orengo is a good man. It was great seeing him on the mic today,” Itumbi wrote, referring to Orengo’s speech at the event. He went on to reveal that Orengo had offered him both intellectual and financial support during difficult times, even when political circumstances prevented public displays of solidarity.
“Jim is one politician I admire, even when we hold different views. As a friend, he has been consistent. When he could not get on record in my legal battles, he offered intellectual and financial support,” Itumbi noted. He concluded with a warm message: “Wish you well, James Orengo.”
Orengo’s appearance at Asiyo’s funeral came amid recent speculation about his health, following weeks of absence from public engagements. Reliable sources indicated that the governor returned to the country earlier this week, with flight records showing he departed on June 23 and arrived back on Tuesday evening. His last public appearance before leaving had been on the same day, when he attended a Senate committee session.
At the burial service, Orengo appeared composed and in high spirits, directly addressing concerns about his wellbeing. “I am alive… I am not going anywhere,” he told mourners, sparking applause and cheers from the crowd.
The reunion of two political figures on opposite sides of the divide Itumbi, a close ally of President William Ruto, and Orengo, a seasoned opposition leader underscored a rare moment of unity in Kenya’s often polarized political landscape. Itumbi’s public praise also highlighted the importance of personal friendships that transcend political rivalry, offering a reminder that respect and loyalty can endure beyond partisan lines.
