John Cox Lorionokou has officially assumed office as the new Registrar of Political Parties following a swearing-in ceremony held at the Supreme Court of Kenya on Monday. The event was presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome, marking the beginning of Lorionokou’s mandate in overseeing Kenya’s multi-party political system.
During the ceremony, Chief Justice Koome emphasized the critical role the Registrar plays in promoting democracy, transparency, and accountability among political parties. She noted that the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) is essential in ensuring that political organizations adhere to the Constitution and maintain internal democracy.
Lorionokou, who succeeds Anne Nderitu, pledged to uphold integrity and impartiality in managing political party affairs, including registration, regulation, and compliance monitoring. His deputy, Agatha Wahome, also took the oath of office as Assistant Registrar, vowing to support the Registrar in implementing reforms that strengthen political institutions.
The ORPP serves as an independent office under the Political Parties Act, tasked with regulating political parties and promoting democratic principles in Kenya’s governance. Lorionokou’s appointment is expected to usher in a renewed focus on institutional efficiency and political accountability ahead of the 2027 General Election.
