Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has compared his political journey under ODM leader Raila Odinga to President William Ruto’s rise under the late Daniel arap Moi.
He made the remarks during a fundraiser for the Eltabashi Educational Trust in Nairobi. The event brought together leaders, scholars, and members of the Somali community. President Ruto was the chief guest.
Positioning for Leadership
Junet said his mentorship under Raila is shaping him for bigger political roles.
“You know, people who work with the old men are the ones who succeed. The way you worked with Moi is the same way I’m working with Baba. When he retires, he can leave it for me, then I can now become the leader of ODM,” he said, drawing applause.
The legislator also carried greetings from Raila, who is currently out of the country. He assured the audience that Raila remains closely connected to the Muslim community.
Defending the Somali Community
Junet defended the Somali community against criticism of their growing political influence. He praised them as hardworking and important to Kenya’s economy.
“There are people in this country who are not happy about your relationship with the Somali community. But these are hardworking people who run businesses and generate a lot for the GDP. They are part and parcel of our broad-based government,” Junet said.
He added that the Somali community will be a key force in the 2027 General Election, noting that their numbers could determine the outcome.
Ruto Praises Education Efforts
In his speech, President Ruto commended the Eltabashi Educational Trust. He said its efforts to support Madarasas and vulnerable children in Northern Kenya will help build a stronger nation.
“The more education is made accessible to our children, the more empowered, equal, and prosperous we become,” Ruto stated.
