ODM is facing fresh divisions after a clash between Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna. The two leaders are expected to share a stage in Mombasa from October 10 to 12 during the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations.
Junet Accuses Sifuna of Wrong Company
Speaking in Mombasa on Saturday, September 14, Junet accused Sifuna of opposing President William Ruto’s broad-based government because of “wrong company.” He pointed to Sifuna’s association with Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba.
“If you walk with people like these, how do you expect to understand the broad-based government?” Junet asked.
ODM’s Commitment to the Broad-Based Government
Junet defended ODM’s cooperation with the Kenya Kwanza government. He reminded party members that ODM had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with President Ruto at KICC.
“As long as the MOU stands, ODM will remain in the broad-based government. We know where we are coming from and where we are going,” he said.
He added that the party will continue to support Ruto’s development agenda despite Sifuna’s concerns.
Anniversary Events in Mombasa
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir said the anniversary will highlight ODM’s journey over the past two decades. Events will include:
- A youth concert
- A women’s convention
- A football tournament
- A youth summit
The party also plans build-up events in Migori and Wajir to involve supporters nationwide.
“This milestone is a reflection on the struggles, victories, and lessons that shape our vision for a just, united, and prosperous Kenya,” Nassir said.
Divisions Ahead of Celebrations
The sharp exchange between Junet and Sifuna signals tension within ODM. As the anniversary approaches, the big question is whether party leaders can put aside their differences and present a united front in Mombasa.
