The late Justice Fred Andago Ochieng’ will be laid to rest on Friday, September 26, 2025, at his home in Menara, Muhoroni Constituency, Kisumu County.
Ahead of the burial, a requiem mass in his honour will be held on Wednesday at 2 pm at St. Austin’s Parish, Msongari, Nairobi. The family confirmed that the cortege will leave Nairobi on Thursday, September 25, for Menara, Koru, where the funeral service and interment will take place the following morning.
On Tuesday, senior government officials, led by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, visited the family at their Nairobi home to condole and join in the burial preparations. Koskei, who worked with Justice Ochieng’ during his tenure at the Judicial Service Commission, described him as “a man dedicated to justice, who served with distinction.”
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo also paid tribute, praising the late judge for his role in judicial reforms. “As we honour his memory and celebrate his life of service, we pray for strength and comfort upon the bereaved family,” he said.
At the time of his passing on September 17, Justice Ochieng’ was serving as Chairperson of the Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce, which is spearheading the nationwide roll-out of mediation as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism.
Justice Ochieng’, who joined the Judiciary in 2003 as a Judge of the High Court, served in various stations, including Kitale, Kakamega, Kisumu, and Nairobi divisions such as Civil, Criminal, and Commercial & Admiralty. In 2022, he was elevated to the Court of Appeal.
Chief Justice Martha Koome hailed him as a “towering figure in commercial law jurisprudence and a strong advocate for alternative dispute resolution.”
The Judiciary and legal fraternity have described his death as a great loss, remembering him as a brilliant legal mind whose reforms advanced access to justice for many Kenyans.
