Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s controversial remarks following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga have sparked outrage across the political spectrum, exposing deep ethnic and political rifts in post-Raila Kenya.
In a viral video, Kahiga alleged that President William Ruto would stop “diverting resources” to Nyanza, claiming the region’s development projects were politically motivated by Raila’s support for the broad-based government. The comments were widely condemned as insensitive and divisive, rekindling historical tensions between Central Kenya and Nyanza.
ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga described Kahiga’s remarks as “an insult to national reconciliation,” accusing him of undermining the unity Raila championed. Jubilee Party secretary general Jeremiah Kioni went further, suggesting Kahiga echoed the sentiments of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Although Kahiga has since apologized, insisting his words were personal, the damage appears done. Even within Mt Kenya, leaders such as Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi have urged Gachagua to distance himself from the remarks.
DCP secretary general Cleopas Malala defended Gachagua, accusing Wanga of stoking division for political gain. Still, the controversy highlights the fragility of Kenya’s ethnic harmony and the challenges facing national unity in the wake of Raila’s passing.
