Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has publicly criticized President William Ruto over the apparent lack of progress at the Emali–Matiliku road project, just days after its grand launch.
In a video shared on Friday, November 14, Kalonzo showed the site, revealing that no excavators, graders, or construction teams were present, leaving only the launch monument visible. This was in stark contrast to the scene during the official launch on Wednesday, November 12, when construction machinery was reportedly on-site.
“This monument says Ruto launched this project on Wednesday, November 12. During the launch, there were graders and other construction materials. Two days later, there is no evidence of progress, except this monument,” Kalonzo said, expressing disappointment over the stalled work.
The 20 km Emali–Matiliku road is part of the larger 42 km Emali–Ukia road project in Ndundune, Makueni County. According to the launch monument, the road is set to be upgraded to bitumen standard. President Ruto said the project will cost Ksh1.1 billion and improve access to key markets, connecting trading centers including Kativani, Manywani, Matiliku, Kalamba, Nziu, Ukia, and Wote, while also linking Nairobi, Kajiado, and Mombasa.
Ruto highlighted that the upgrade would reduce transport costs, expand trade in perishable goods and livestock, and enable farmers to reach markets more efficiently, thereby cutting post-harvest losses and increasing earnings.
Kalonzo’s video quickly went viral, drawing reactions from Kenyans, many criticizing the government for prioritizing flashy launches over actual development. “Flashy launches are easy, but real development requires consistent follow-through,” one user commented.
However, Kalonzo also faced backlash, with some noting his long tenure as MP, Vice President, and minister without significant infrastructure achievements in Ukambani. Critics questioned his timing in raising concerns about the project.
President Ruto’s visit to Ukambani was part of a four-day development tour, during which he launched multiple infrastructure projects and met regional leaders.
