Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has urged Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya to take immediate action to secure Kenya’s borders. This comes after reports that Jubaland forces from Somalia have crossed into the country.
Speaking at AIC Kasina Church in Mlolongo, Machakos County, on Sunday, Kalonzo said border security is the duty of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), not the Interior Ministry.
“These are critical times. Protecting our sovereignty means guarding our borders. This responsibility does not lie with the Interior Ministry,” he said.
The warning follows reports that Jubaland forces occupied BP1 Primary School in Mandera, disrupting daily life and forcing families to flee. Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif and Senator Ali Roba have also expressed concern, saying the incursion threatens Kenya’s sovereignty.
Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen dismissed the claims, saying security agencies are in control. Kalonzo disagreed, insisting the Defence Ministry must act.
“Foreign military presence is not for the police to handle. The Defence CS must act. Mandera residents are crying. The military should seize those rifles,” he said.
Kalonzo was joined by Eugene Wamalwa, Makueni Woman Rep Rose Museo, lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, and Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti. Wamalwa called the Mandera insecurity “regrettable” and stressed that opposition leaders should be heard on national security matters.
Governor Ndeti described Kalonzo as the face of the opposition, especially after Raila Odinga joined President William Ruto’s government. She also rallied support for his 2027 presidential bid.
“Kenya will not be the same again. The young people shed blood to free this country from bad leadership. Kalonzo Musyoka is clean and ready to lead Kenya forward,” Ndeti said.
Kalonzo’s call highlights urgent concerns about Kenya’s northern border and signals pressure on the government to secure the region.
