Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Thursday paid a deeply symbolic tribute to his late political ally, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, by delivering 100 cattle to his Opoda Farm home in Bondo, Siaya County.
Armed with a traditional shield and spear, Kalonzo led a high-powered delegation from Ukambani, including Kitui Senator Enock Wambua, governors, and Members of Parliament. Their arrival was marked by rhythmic chants of “Jowi! Jowi!” a Luo exclamation symbolizing strength and bravery, reserved for great warriors and leaders.
The grand gesture, steeped in cultural significance, was part of a traditional Luo ritual known as Tero Buru. The ceremony involves driving cattle into the homestead of the deceased to ward off evil spirits and cleanse the home. It also signifies honour for a respected elder or leader who has passed away.
According to Luo customs, the number of cattle brought to such a ceremony reflects the status and legacy of the departed. By delivering 100 head of cattle, Kalonzo underscored his immense respect for Raila Odinga, who was not only his longtime political ally but also a towering figure in Kenya’s democratic journey.
Raila, who was laid to rest on October 19 after a state funeral attended by local and international dignitaries, continues to inspire tributes from across Kenya’s political spectrum.
As Kalonzo’s herd of cattle streamed into the Opoda Farm compound, locals and mourners joined in singing and dancing, transforming the solemn moment into a celebration of Raila’s life and enduring legacy. The symbolic act captured the essence of unity and mutual respect that has long defined the friendship between Kalonzo and Raila — two leaders bound by shared visions of justice, democracy, and peace.
