Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s absence from the national Mashujaa Day celebrations held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County on Monday raised eyebrows and stirred political debate across the country.
The celebrations, presided over by President William Ruto, drew thousands of residents and dignitaries to the region—widely considered Kalonzo’s political stronghold. His conspicuous no-show quickly became a talking point, with some interpreting it as a political statement.
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei led the criticism, accusing Kalonzo of being unpatriotic for skipping a national event meant to celebrate Kenya’s heroes. “Kalonzo skipping the Mashujaa Day national celebrations was unpatriotic to the country yet all Ukambani are attending in mammoth crowds,” said Cherargei. He thanked Kitui residents for their warm reception of President Ruto and guests despite Kalonzo’s absence.
However, earlier in the day, Kalonzo issued a heartfelt statement dedicating this year’s Mashujaa Day to the memory of the late Raila Odinga. Describing the former Prime Minister as “the embodiment of Kenya’s enduring spirit of resilience and sacrifice,” Kalonzo praised Raila’s lifelong commitment to justice and democracy.
“Today I join many Kenyans in dedicating this Mashujaa Day to my brother and dear friend who has taken his final bow, our second Prime Minister Raila Odinga,” he wrote.
Kalonzo recalled Raila’s decades-long struggle for multiparty democracy, constitutional reform, and equality for all Kenyans. “Years of detention did not stop you. The agony of stolen elections did not crush you,” he noted.
As Kitui hosted vibrant celebrations filled with patriotic performances and tributes, Kalonzo’s absence left a noticeable void. The incident has reignited debate over his political strategy and regional leadership role as he continues to position himself in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
