Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Thursday drew attention with his striking jungle green outfit as he led a delegation to Bondo, Siaya County, to pay tribute to the late Raila Amollo Odinga.
Speaking in Kisumu before proceeding to Raila’s Opoda Farm home, Kalonzo said his choice of attire was a symbolic tribute to the ODM leader, whom he described as “the father of maandamano.” The term “maandamano,” Swahili for demonstrations, has long been associated with Raila’s relentless push for democratic reforms and accountability through peaceful protests.
“I am dressed this way to honour the father of maandamano,” Kalonzo said. “We resisted, and Kenyans are still resisting bad governance.”
The jungle green outfit, similar to what Kalonzo wore during past protest marches, carried a powerful political message. It evoked memories of the spirited street demonstrations that defined Kenya’s opposition politics, particularly during the years when Raila Odinga mobilized millions in the fight for electoral justice and constitutional reform.
Kalonzo’s gesture reflected deep respect for Raila’s political legacy—a legacy built on sacrifice, resilience, and unwavering commitment to democracy. His attire not only symbolized solidarity with the late opposition chief’s ideals but also subtly hinted at the continuity of the struggle for better governance.
Accompanying Kalonzo during the visit were Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, and Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. The leaders paid glowing tributes to Raila, remembering him as a statesman whose life’s mission was to champion the rights and freedoms of ordinary Kenyans.
Kalonzo’s message in Kisumu and later in Bondo resonated strongly with Raila’s supporters, many of whom view him as the natural heir to the reformist spirit that Odinga embodied. As the country continues to reflect on Raila’s monumental contribution to Kenya’s democracy, Kalonzo’s symbolic gesture served as a poignant reminder that the struggle for justice and good governance is far from over.
