Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has opened up about his last interactions with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, expressing the deep sense of unease he felt when his repeated calls to Raila went unanswered in the days leading up to his passing.
Speaking during an interview on TV47 on Saturday evening, Kalonzo disclosed that he had tried to reach Raila several times within the ten days before his death, but the ODM leader did not pick up. According to Kalonzo, he had wanted to invite Raila to the Wiper National Delegates Conference, just as Raila had earlier invited him to attend the ODM Congress.
“We used to speak often. However, for the last ten days before he died, I tried several times to call him, but he was not available,” Kalonzo said.
“I wanted to invite him to the Wiper delegates conference. With his silence, I sensed something was not right.”
After numerous failed attempts, the former Vice President reached out to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, seeking information about Raila’s whereabouts. Uhuru reportedly told him that he had spoken to Raila, who assured him that he was fine and preparing to return home.
Kalonzo further reflected on the personal bond he shared with Raila, emphasizing that their relationship went beyond politics. He fondly recalled moments they spent together watching Arsenal Football Club matches, often joined by Uhuru.
“Raila valued friendship deeply. We were both great fans of Arsenal and used to watch football together,” Kalonzo reminisced.
The Wiper leader described Raila as a transformative figure who reshaped Kenya’s political landscape and whose legacy will endure for generations.
Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday, October 15, and his burial is scheduled for Sunday, October 19.
His death marks the end of an era for Kenya’s opposition politics and leaves a void that will not be easily filled.
