Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka could not hold back tears at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Friday, October 17, 2025, as he mourned the death of his long-time political ally and friend, Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga.
In an emotional video shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Kalonzo was seen wiping tears with a white handkerchief while surrounded by Wiper Party officials. The visibly heartbroken leader paid tribute to Raila, describing him as a man who embodied courage, unity, and justice.
“These are truly heavy days for our nation. As we gather to celebrate Raila’s remarkable life, we will find solace in his spirit of courage, unity, and justice,” Kalonzo wrote.
The former Vice President also confirmed that he had cancelled his planned UK tour to return home ahead of the late Raila’s state funeral. According to his secretariat, Kalonzo departed Heathrow International Airport in London on Thursday evening to join Kenyans in mourning.
Later that morning, Kalonzo received visiting dignitaries from Tanzania at JKIA, including former President Jakaya Kikwete and Vice President Philip Mpango, who arrived in Nairobi to pay their last respects.
“Their presence shows how deeply Raila’s life touched people beyond our borders. He was not just a political icon in Kenya but a continental figure,” Kalonzo stated.
Overcome with emotion, the Wiper leader reflected on his close relationship with Raila, saying he had lost not just a political ally but a brother and a friend.
“We walked together through moments of struggle, hope, and belief in a better Kenya,” he said.
As preparations continue for Raila’s state funeral, the mood in the nation remains somber, with leaders and citizens alike paying tribute to one of Kenya’s most influential figures.
