Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya (WDM-K) leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called for the newly renovated Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County to be renamed in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga.
Kalonzo made the proposal on Thursday during a visit to Opoda Farm in Bondo, where he joined other leaders and family members in paying tribute to Raila’s legacy. He urged the Kitui County Assembly to move swiftly and table a motion to officially rename the facility “Raila Amollo Odinga Stadium.”
The former Vice President said renaming the stadium would be a fitting tribute to Raila’s lifelong dedication to national unity, democracy, and the development of sports in Kenya.
“Kitui County Assembly, I want you to move a motion expeditiously to name the newly renovated Ithookwe Stadium Raila Amollo Odinga Stadium,” Kalonzo said, emphasizing that such gestures ensure Raila’s legacy endures across generations.
Kalonzo highlighted Raila’s passion for sports, especially football, recalling that both were ardent Arsenal fans. In a light-hearted moment, he quipped, “I was a better player than Raila in soccer, but he was a better commentator. And both of us were Arsenal.”
He also backed Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga’s earlier proposal to name the upcoming Talanta Stadium in Nairobi after Raila, describing both initiatives as national symbols of appreciation for his decades of public service and leadership.
“I heard Governor Wanga during Raila’s burial talking about Talanta Stadium, and I want to support that strongly,” he added.
The Wiper leader capped off his visit by honouring his longtime political ally in a deeply symbolic gesture, delivering about 100 cattle to Raila’s Opoda Farm in Siaya County—a move widely interpreted as a mark of profound respect and friendship.
