Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has strongly dismissed speculation that he is planning to join President William Ruto’s government, terming it a “rogue and criminal regime”. Speaking on Saturday during a public function in Kamuuani, Machakos County, the former Vice President rebuked online claims suggesting he was considering aligning with Kenya Kwanza, insisting that he remains firmly in the opposition.
“They are making announcements everywhere that Kalonzo wants to join the government. That could never be me! Working with Ruto? Maybe another Kalonzo,” Musyoka declared.
His remarks come in the wake of growing calls by Kenya Kwanza allies urging him to join the administration. Most notably, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi recently stated that he was confident Kalonzo would soon join President Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in pushing the national agenda forward.
Wandayi, once a vocal member of the opposition, joined government ranks last year following a surprise alliance between Ruto and Odinga that saw several opposition figures absorbed into state positions.
But Musyoka maintained a hardline stance, accusing Ruto’s government of orchestrating violence and suppressing dissent. He pointed to the deaths of young protesters in recent months during anti-government demonstrations as evidence of state brutality.
“The regime has blood on its hands,” Kalonzo said. “The fundamental rights of every Kenyan must be respected. People have the right to express themselves provided they are not harming anyone else.”
He also condemned the arrest of prominent activist Boniface Mwangi on Saturday evening in Lukenya, Machakos County. Mwangi was reportedly taken into custody by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over allegations of “facilitating terror” during the June 25 demonstrations.
Musyoka called the arrest an attack on freedom of expression and instructed opposition-affiliated lawyers to represent Mwangi in court. “We all know the goons behind the chaos were sponsored by Ruto’s regime. The Gen Z protesters were peaceful,” he asserted.
Declaring that Kenya is undergoing a revolution, Kalonzo expressed confidence that the momentum will lead to change in 2027. “This country is tired,” he said. “Ruto stands no chance of winning a second term.”
