Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has revealed that the opposition will travel to Bondo next Thursday in a symbolic gathering to honour the late Raila Odinga. Speaking on Saturday evening during the Ngemi ya Watho festival in Kiambu County, Kalonzo described the planned visit as a cultural celebration of Raila’s heritage and a life well lived.
“Since we are still in the mourning period, I welcome you to join me on Thursday so that we can go and shout Jowi. Let us go to Bondo next Thursday in a style like no other,” Kalonzo told the crowd.
The Wiper leader urged Kenyans to accompany him to Raila’s hometown, saying the event would celebrate the traditions of the Luo community and pay homage to Raila’s contribution to Kenya’s democracy.
During his speech, Kalonzo took aim at President William Ruto, accusing him of hypocrisy over his public mourning of the late ODM leader. He claimed that Ruto’s expression of grief was insincere, citing the President’s past opposition to Raila’s reform efforts, including the 2010 Constitution.
“There is no way William Ruto and his ilk can pretend to mourn Raila Odinga. Those of us who feel we have an inheritance in the Constitution 2010, let us go to Bondo. People are giving out cows and goats—let us also go and celebrate the culture,” Kalonzo stated.
The upcoming Bondo visit will mark the opposition’s first major gathering at Odinga’s gravesite since his burial on October 19. The event also follows reports that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua plans to visit Raila’s home to pay his respects—a move that has stirred mixed reactions within the ODM party.
Raila’s Opoda farm in Bondo has continued to attract national and continental leaders paying tribute to the long-serving opposition figure who shaped Kenya’s political landscape for decades.
