Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has launched a scathing attack on President William Ruto, accusing him of unilaterally reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in defiance of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) agreement. Kalonzo, speaking at the burial of Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve in Nzeluni, Mwingi West, Kitui County, expressed deep concern over what he termed as Ruto’s disregard for consensus and constitutional principles.
Kalonzo said he had written to both President Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga regarding the controversial IEBC appointments but had received no response. He warned that the opposition would not remain silent as the electoral playing field is skewed.
“You cannot be a player and pick a referee. I have written to Ruto and Raila Odinga as a NADCO principal and received no reply. Nevertheless, we are ready. Even if Ruto appoints himself as IEBC chair, we will still send him home in 2027,” Kalonzo declared.
He likened the situation to the 2016 U.S. presidential election, stating that Kenyans would safeguard the vote regardless of who oversees the IEBC. “We will announce results at every polling station and will not need your IEBC. Kenyans will choose their leader themselves,” he said.
Kalonzo also claimed that the country was under siege and required liberation from what he called the “shackles” of President Ruto’s administration. His remarks were echoed by DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, who accused Ruto of breaching the principle of consultation that was central to the Bomas process.
“You have violated the principle of concurrence and consultation that underlie the Bomas process, and we want to tell you that we are ready for you nonetheless,” Wamalwa stated.
On a separate note, Kalonzo called for thorough investigations into the death of MCA Joel Munuve, indicating that more toxicology samples had been sent abroad. He warned against political assassinations and vowed that the opposition would not allow the return of such dark tactics in Kenya’s political arena.
The remarks underscore the rising political temperatures ahead of the 2027 General Election.
