Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has lauded the efforts of the National Police Service (NPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in their ongoing probe into the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were. Kaluma, speaking via his X account on Sunday, expressed confidence in the preliminary steps taken by law enforcement and called for transparency and consistent public updates as investigations proceed.
“I’m encouraged by the commitment shown by the National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations towards unravelling the brutal killing of the Honourable Charles Ong’ondo Were,” Kaluma said.
He urged the investigating agencies to intensify their efforts and keep the public informed to uphold trust and accountability in the justice system. “We owe it to Hon. Were’s family, his constituents, and the nation to ensure that no stone is left unturned,” he emphasized.
MP Were was gunned down in a chilling attack on the evening of April 30, 2025, while stuck in traffic along Valley Road, Nairobi. The assassin, wearing a hood to conceal his identity, reportedly followed the legislator from Parliament with the help of a motorcycle rider. The two were tracked through routes including City Hall Way, Wabera Street, Kenyatta Avenue, and Jakaya Kikwete Road before the fatal shooting occurred.
Police reported a significant breakthrough in the case on Sunday with the arrest of a key suspect in Nairobi. Investigators also recovered a vehicle believed to have been used by the suspect and his accomplices during their mission.
DCI Director Mohamed Amin confirmed the arrest, stating, “We have one key suspect, and we are looking for more.” He added that detectives are now working to recover the murder weapon, establish the motive, identify accomplices, and locate the motorcycle used in the operation.
The brutal killing has sparked national outrage, with calls from leaders and civil society for justice to be delivered swiftly and impartially. Kaluma stressed the broader implications of the case, noting that the outcome would reflect the strength and credibility of Kenya’s justice system.
